    Writer, artist, and modern-day Thoreau, Hubbard (1900-1988) is known for his books ( Shantyboat on the Bayous and Payne Hollow and his self-sufficient life. Wendell Berry supplies the foreword to this collection of 83 woodcuts (about half of what Hubbard is known to have created), which are accompanied by brief excerpts from Hubbard's writings.
