Writer, artist, and modern-day Thoreau, Hubbard (1900-1988) is known for his books ( Shantyboat on the Bayous and Payne Hollow and his self-sufficient life. Wendell Berry supplies the foreword to this collection of 83 woodcuts (about half of what Hubbard is known to have created), which are accompanied by brief excerpts from Hubbard's writings. Many of the woodcuts have never been published; none have until now been published in color. 9x8.75" Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or. - University of Kentucky
" Hubbard was a gifted writer, but during his lifetime he was better known as an artist. He painted in both oil and watercolor, but over the years he also cut and printed approximately 170 woodcuts. It was in this medium that his potential as an artist was most full realized."
