Behind her lives / Briana Cole.

Cole, Briana, (author.).

Summary:

""That's not my sister." Overwhelmed by shock and relief, those are the only words Deven can muster when she is called to identify the body of a suicide victim. A body she was informed was her sister, Kennedy. But as she stares at the lifeless stranger, she's filled with questions: Who is this woman? Why was Deven listed as family? And most important, where is Kennedy? Her intuition tells her just one thing: this can't be a total coincidence. Desperate to put the pieces together, Deven launches her own investigation. Soon, she finds herself tangled in a web of secrets and lies so twisted that it blurs the lines between fact and fiction. And between the sister she thought she knew and the one who seems to have many hidden, dangerous lives. But only Kennedy would have the answers to increasingly urgent questions. Just one possibility is clear: Kennedy isn't missing. Maybe she just doesn't want to be found. And maybe you can never truly know another person. Even your own sister"-- Provided by publisher.

This exciting thriller from Cole (Couples Wanted) is full of twists and turns that will keep readers engaged. The New Jersey police tell Deven that her younger sister Kennedy was found dead from an overdose in her apartment. They ask her to come to the morgue to identify Kennedy's body while fingerprints are being processed. But one look and Deven insists it isn't her. She is not sure what is going on but begins looking for answers—all she gets is more questions. Kennedy's friend Benji seems to know more than he is saying. There is Deuce, a man with a dark side, who is connected to Kennedy somehow. He warns Deven to stop looking into the matter and insinuates that her safety may be at risk if she doesn't. Deven's friend Paul is her emotional support during this trying time, but their friendship gets complicated by their mutual attraction and Paul's connection to Deven's family. Add in Deven's mother having dementia and she has no one to turn to and must figure out on her own how all these people are connected to her sister and where Kennedy might be. VERDICT Cole's characters are well developed and compelling. Fans of B. A. Paris and Liv Constantine will enjoy this book.—Melissa Palmer
