PreS-K—The first day of school is a stressful and anxiety-inducing scenario for young bear Martin. Martin's mother attempts to alleviate some of Martin's worries and reluctance by discussing all the wonderful things he will experience at school, from hearing stories to playing on the playground with friends. His mother is so convincing that even his younger sister Anna thinks he is lucky to go to school. This quaint and lovable bear family is so relatable; from Martin, curious and cautious, to his mother, the star of the tale, as she gently encourages his questions and provides cheerful explanations for the benefits of trying something new and making such a big change. The illustrations are colorful and warm, exuding coziness, which may help calm similarly anxious young readers as much as Mama Bear's soothing words do. VERDICT A good addition to any collection, this playful and sweet take on a universal event may help parents and caregivers prepare their little ones.—Kaitlin Malixi, Kensington Health Sciences Academy, Philadelphia
