  • School Library Journal Reviews : SLJ Reviews 2018 November

Gr 4–6—Legendary moments in U.S. sports history are brought to life. Each author sets the scene before diving into the main topic. For example, Lake Placid Miracle includes an overview of the Cold War and Russia's history of dominance in hockey at the Olympics, as well as biographies of coaches and athletes on the U.S. hockey team. Infrequent direct quotes are in bold and italics, but with so many of the events having occurred in the last century, readers may wonder why more weren't included. Critical thinking questions at the end of each book encourage students to dive deeper. The low level of detailing in the comic illustrations and the simple story lines make these ideal for browsers, not researchers. VERDICT Where collections are in need of more options for reluctant nonfiction readers, these will fit the bill. Otherwise, pass.
