  • Baker & Taylor
A reconstruction of the 1973 fire that devastated New Orleans' subterranean gay community describes how the Up Stairs Lounge and dozens of innocent patrons were targeted in what became a catalyzing event in the gay liberation movement.
  • Book News
Fieseler, a journalist, tells the story of the fire at the Up Stairs Lounge in New Orleans, a gay bar that sometimes doubled as a church, in 1973 by an arsonist, who killed 32 people in the largest mass murder of homosexuals in US history until 2016. Families were ashamed to claim loved ones, the Catholic Church refused burial rights, some newspapers refused to mention homosexuality, and police never questioned the primary suspect. The fire and response to it spurred gay activism, but the story disappeared and did not receive political attention. Annotation ©2019 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
