- School Library Journal Reviews : SLJ Reviews 2017 August
Gr 4 UpâA tasty offering with more than 50 recipes covering five skill levelsâthere's something here for everyone. The book spices up basic staples like PB&J and grilled cheese by adding historical facts in special "Between the Bread" sections, as well as challenges to experiment called "We Dare You" (mayonnaise plus peanut butter and a fried egg!). Some of the more advanced sandwiches (including a Shrimp Po'Boy and Apple Pie) involve special tools that Deering and Lentz take care to explain and illustrate. No matter the difficulty level, instructions are clear and easy to understand. Lentz (illustrator of the board book series "Book-O-Hats") has adeptly created sharp, appealing, and clever illustrations: sandwiches are deconstructed in midair to help inspiring chefs visualize each layer. The book also includes an array of vegetarian options and allergy-friendly substitutions.
