Daulter (The Organic Family Cookbook) presents 12 children's parties, three for each season of the year, organized from time line to execution. From an egg-dying garden party to a community cooking party, all the events use natural, recycled, and reimagined materials, e.g., dyes made from fruits and vegetables, aprons from old sweaters, and canning jars as drinking glasses and centerpieces. Party foods include Roasted Veggie Soup with hearty Mac-n-Cheese and Ginger Spiced Acorn Cookies. Activities include picking berries and making jam, a Natural Spa Party, and a Knights and Dragon Quest Party. The photography depicts idyllic fun for all the children. Although the young girls attending the spa day look sublime sunning themselves while wearing banana and avocado face masks with cucumber slices on their eyes, it is doubtful that this would be much fun for children for more than a minute or two. The Gratitude Birthday Party sounds like a parent's idea rather than a dream party for a child. VERDICT This beautifully illustrated book provides ideas for low-cost invitations and decorations and sustainable party foods, but both the activities and the food are too rigid and judicious to be much fun for children. Recommended only where there is demand for earth-friendly children's parties.—Ann Weber, Bellarmine Coll. Preparatory Lib., San Jose, CA
